Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario now demand that there be a “squeeze” at least for those under the age of 16. The Canadian university has in fact shown that 55% of children between 12 and 24 years of age report having heavy side effects after taking these drinks.

The results
The research team tested 2,055 children to understand how often they drink energy drinks. Among those who consume these drinks, almost 25% have confessed to having experienced an accelerated heartbeat, another quarter of the sample difficulty falling asleep, while 0.2% have even suffered from seizures of epilepsy.

Furthermore, 18.3% had headaches, nausea 5.1, vomiting or diarrhea and 3.6% chest pain.

Effects also respecting the recommended maximum limit
What most struck the researchers is that the vast majority of people experiencing side effects consumed much less than the recommended maximum of one or two drinks.

The expert’s opinion
“At the moment – explains Professor David Hammond, first author of the research – there is no restriction on the sale to children. In fact, the cans are often placed where the most loved drinks are found by the very young “.
